A couple of days ago it was revealed that re-negotiations between Sony and Disney around Spider-Man have fallen through and the character will be taken out of the MCU entirely. This has come as quite a shock to most fans, especially after the release of the latest movie Spider-Man: Far From Home (John Watts)  which recently passed the $1 Billion mark in the worldwide box office.     So what does this mean for the future of the beloved Superhero? Well in this Situation Review I will be discussing why Sony did what they did and several possibilities for what will happen with Spider-Man. Disney Vs Sony So, the decision comes after Disney wanted to change the deal that they had with Sony so that they would gain 50% of the overall gross of the Spider-Man movies, rather than the 5% that they were currently receiving. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018, Peter Ramsay, Robert Persichetti Jr., Rodney Rothman)  hasn't even hit theatres yet and, according to The Hollywood Reporter , Sony Studios are already planning both a sequel and a spin-off. According to the article, the sequel will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Voltron) and will be written by David Callaham (Expendables 2, Wonder Woman 84) . Sony is also eyeing Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One, Voltron) to helm the spin-off. Initial Thoughts Sony must be very confident with their upcoming movie if their green-lighting these projects prior to its release! I imagine that Sony is dropping this news in advance in order to improve on the box-office tracking for Into The Spider-Verse  which, at the moment, is crammed in a very busy Holiday line-up, alongside Aquaman (2018, James Wan)  and Mary Poppins Returns (2018, Rob Marshall) , which seem to be the two big contenders this year. Sony has taken its first step in its new Spider-Man related films with Venom (2017, Ruben Fleischer). Which has been moderately successful so far. Because of this, I thought I would go over the other the state of the Spider-Man films that Sony has both ready for release and in production. Including Venom , the studio has Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018, Phil Lord & Chris Miller) coming out this December, Solo movies for Black Cat and Silver Sable and a solo movie for Morbius: The Living Vampire. All characters featured in the Spider-Man comics.  Venom Venom has taken a serious hit from critics. with a 31% approval rating from critics. Normally, this would be enough to kill a film. But, surprisingly, Venom has had quite a successful run at the Box Office, grossing just over $380 million worldwide by its 2nd weekend. Sony begins its new era of Spider-Man related films with their solo movie, Venom (2018, Ruben Fleischer) . Featuring the fan-favourite Spidey Villain/Anti-Hero. With Marvel Studios and Sony sharing custody over Spider-Man (Tom Holland) , allowing him to star in the MCU, Sony is hoping to make a bunch of movies focusing around characters that are part of the Spider-Man brand, and they are hoping that Venom will be there version of Deadpool (2016, Tim Miller) , with an Anti-Hero who plays by his own rules. And with Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception) playing the main character you can expect a good performance.     But with Sony's spotty track record when it comes to their Spider-Man property this movie can go either way. Hopefully, this will be more Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spider-Man) than Mark Webb (500 Days Of Summer, The Amazing Spider-Man) . First Thoughts Overall, I think this film is good. And so the Superhero Genre continues with another year of films! 2017 saw Marvel continue in great success with some of its big franchises, such as Guardians Of The Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok and DC saw great success with Wonder Woman and unfortunate problems with Justice League. But next year sees the genre grow even bigger! With both new heroes, continuations of heroes and some Ani-Heroes joining the field! 10. New Mutants (April 13th) The only reason that this film is at the bottom of my list is that, whilst I was interested in the Trailer, I was not impressed by it. However, I do appreciate experimentation in cinema. And this is definitely quite a new take on the Superhero genre. By adding a horror element to the mix. New Mutants  centres around a group of mutants inside a secret facility and coming to terms with their abilities.
