Spider-Verse Sequel & Spin-off? Situation Review

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018, Peter Ramsay, Robert Persichetti Jr., Rodney Rothman) hasn't even hit theatres yet and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony Studios are already planning both a sequel and a spin-off. According to the article, the sequel will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Voltron) and will be written by David Callaham (Expendables 2, Wonder Woman 84). Sony is also eyeing Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One, Voltron) to helm the spin-off.

Initial Thoughts

Sony must be very confident with their upcoming movie if their green-lighting these projects prior to its release! I imagine that Sony is dropping this news in advance in order to improve on the box-office tracking for Into The Spider-Verse which, at the moment, is crammed in a very busy Holiday line-up, alongside Aquaman (2018, James Wan) and Mary Poppins Returns (2018, Rob Marshall), which seem to be the two big contenders this year. So this news might help the movie stand out from the competition.

Sequel

I have yet to see the actual film so I can't really comment too much on the potential of a sequel. However, the fact that it already has a sequel in the works gives me hope for the quality of the film. I am a little concerned with the switching of directors. This is mainly because, from the trailers, Into The Spider-Verse looks heavily stylized in its animation. And I'm worried that the sequel could potentially lose that some of that style with Joaquim Dos. But his previous work does give me hope as Avatar and Voltron do have pretty good animation. So I have hopes for this sequel, even if I am a little sceptical.

All Female Spin-off

This is a very interesting idea. Spider-Man has one of the best group of supporting characters, just behind Batman. The film will centre around many of the female superheroes. The film will supposedly centre around heroes such as Spider-Gwen, Spider-Woman, Spider-Girl, Madame Web and Silk. All huge fan favourites that would do well in a film together. I think Lauren Montgomery is a good fit for this movie. She's directed several animated movies, one of them being the animated Wonder Woman movie from 2009 which I thoroughly enjoyed. So I believe that this film would be in good hands!

Other Spider movies?

In my earlier post, I talked about other Spider-Man related movies that Sony had planned. So far not much has been said about those projects. However, Venom has grossed nearly $900 million globally so expect a sequel for that film to be announced soon! As for the others. Black Cat and Silver Sable appear to have been shelved for the time being whilst actor Jared Leto (Dallas Buyer's Club, Suicide Squad) teased his newly shaven goatee in preparation for Morbius.

Conclusion

I'm excited to see where Sony takes its new era of Spider-Man movies. This news of a sequel has me more excited for Into The Spider-Verse although I feel like that was the plan all along. The female Spin-off can work, particularly if they get Lauren Montgomery on the project, and I would really like to see all of those characters show up on the big screen!

So that's my Situation Review for the planned sequel and Spin-off of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. What do you think of the news? Are you excited or do you have your concerns? Auteurship: David Fincher

The Auteur theory is that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision.  I am going to use  David Fincher as an example, because he usually has similar aspects throughout all of his films such as bleakness of a setting; several single frames that flash, low-key lighting and characters that are in the shadows so you can’t see their faces. All of these styles can be found in Fight Club (1999). In most of Fincher’s films the settings seem to have a bleak and uninteresting look to them. In Fight Club this is shown in places like the office of where Jack works, the cancer support group hall, Jack’s apartment. All of these places are just different shades of the same colour (mainly green, grey or dark orange). This is to convey a sense of misery and darkness within the storyline, which the characters are just drifting through their lives. Something that Fincher portrays beautifully in Fight Club. This is a good example of David Fincher’s position as an Au...

Oz: The great and Powerful Review

When I first heard that this film was being made I was very skeptical. The Original film with Dorothy and the wicked witch was an important part of many people's childhood that it seemed that this prequel couldn't live up to it. But after seeing it at the cinema my skepticism was laid to rest. This film is AWESOME!!!    The film follows a similar structure narrative-wise to that of the Wizard of Oz. You start off with in Kansas where everything is in black-and-white, keeping to continuity, then you have the twister that takes the character to the land of Oz. The audience is then introduced important characters like Theodora and Evanora, we even get the journey down the yellow-brick road. The writers have brilliantly taken all these elements from the previous film and used them to create a contemporary origin to the Oz that children were introduced too in 1939.    James Franco was well cast in this role as a rude and selfish magician who w...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Trailer Highlights

Star Wars: The Last Jedi New Poster So Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) comes out in December and we're only now getting the second trailer, just two months away from the release date. Either Disney has seriously dropped the ball on the promotional campaign or they're just so confident in this film that they feel it doesn't require a lot of publicity for fans to get excited about. My guess would be the latter. Since the past two Disney-Produced Star Wars films have both raked in a combined total of $3,124,280,897, It'd be safe to say that Disney would think that. However, right before the trailer was released last night, director Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) suggested to fans that they should avoid this trailer. WHAT?! What kind of a marketing tactic is that?! Perhaps if you wish for fans to avoid spoilers then you should urge the marketing campaign to avoid them at all costs. Initial Thoughts Yeah! This trailer has me more intrigued about the story than ever, ...
