Yesterday it was dropped by Variety that James Gunn (Guardians Of The Galaxy, Slither)  has been hired by Warner Bros. and DC to write the script for the upcoming  Suicide Squad 2  and to possibly direct it as well. This is the first project that Gunn has been hired for since he was fired from Guardians Of The Galazxy 3  in July this year after several tweets that the filmmaker wrote around 8 years ago were revealed that caused serious controversy. Initial Thoughts I'm 50/50 on this news. James Gunn did an amazing job with the first two Guardians Of The Galaxy movies, personally, I think they're the most visually beautiful Marvel movies ever made, and Suicide Squad is basically DC's answer to GOTG . Yesterday evening it was announced by producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli and current Bond actor Daniel Craig (Casino Royale, Skyfall) that Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting)  will no longer be directing Bond 25 due to creative differences between the director and the studio. The director had been brought earlier this year in May to helm the sequel. Initial Thoughts Honestly, I didn't even know that Danny Boyle was signed on for a Bond film, so this story is even more of a surprise to me. However, I kind of understand why it happened. I really enjoy Danny Boyle as a director, but I don't think he was a good match for Bond. Recently it was being reported that Disney and Lucasfilm had put future Star Wars anthology projects on hold. Whilst Lucasfilm has denied the reports the fan backlash to the new Star Wars films has been considerably strong that this idea wouldn't be so far-fetched.  After Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017, Rian Johnson)  became a highly divisive film among the fans and then Solo: A Star Wars Story opening at only £83 million worldwide (£50 million less than projected) it wouldn't be a surprise if Disney were concerned with the franchise was being run.  Behind The Scenes The Last Jedi/Fan Backlash This is probably where the fan backlash came from. Last night it reported that actor Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Blade Runner 2049) would not only be acting but producing a Joker Solo film for the DCEU. The reaction to the news has been divisive over fans. Some fans are willing to give Leto another shot whilst others do not wish to see Jared Leto ever wear the Make-up ever again. However, I believe the situation is a little more complicated than people are saying. And, to be honest, more complicated than it really should be. Leto's Joker Personally, I think a Jared Leto Joker movie could be quite good. Leto's Joker was quite interesting and very different from other interpretations of the character. Also, I imagine Leto wants to do the character justice. Whilst I believe  Suicide Squad  did lay a foundation for a good interpretation of the Joker it also held Leto's performance back. For a while, it seemed that the Harley Quinn movie wasn't really going anywhere. Whilst she will be starring in the upcoming Suicide Squad 2 (2019, Gavin O'Connor) her other projects don't seem to have made any progression. But yesterday the project took a huge stride as it was announced that unknown director Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs, According To My Mother)  has been hired to direct a DC movie starring Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie)  and to feature the Superhero team Birds Of Prey. With the script being written by Christina Hodson (Shut in, Bumblebee). This news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood. First Thoughts I'm very intrigued by this idea. I'm not entirely on board with it, as there are things that I have issues with, but I'm very intrigued. Yesterday evening Warner Bros. announced that Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Serenity)  is leaving Batgirl, after being signed on to the project nearly a year ago in March 2017. Whedon himself issued the following statement: "Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realise I really didn't have a story. Yesterday it was reported by Variety that John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein (Vacation, Horrible Bosses)  are in negotiations to direct the solo Flash movie, titled Flashpoint. This is the first piece of DC news since Walter Hamada (It, The Conjuring)  was hired as Head of the DC Film division. Daley & Goldstein have mainly worked on comedy films and Variety has reported that Warner Bros. is eyeing a more comedic tone to the film. For those who don't know, Flashpoint is about The Flash going back in time to save his mother. But in doing so, he creates a ripple effect that takes the rest of the DC superheroes down very dark paths. First Thoughts I think this is a terrible idea. Whilst the two were screenwriters on Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017, Jon Watts) , which I really liked, I thought the quality of that film was mainly down to Watts's directing more than anything else. Yesterday afternoon Warner Bros. announced that Executive Producer Walter Hamada (The Conjuring, It)  has been named President of DC films. The announcement comes after Jon Berg left the position in December due to Justice League (2017, Zack Snyder)  met disappointing box office results. Warner's President Toby Emmerich had this to say about Hamada: "Walter is creative, resourceful and committed to excellence and will bring those qualities to his oversight of our Superhero films. He's a terrific production executive and served as an executive producer on two of the summer's most popular films, New Line's It and Annabelle: Creation. I'm confident that Walter and Geoff (Johns), working with our filmmaking partners, will deliver films that will resonate with both broad global audiences as well as DC fanboys and fangirls.   Yesterday, it was revealed that the Murdoch brothers, Heads of Fox, have been having talks with Bob Iger, Head of Disney, to sell a vast majority of their company to the Mouse House. Whilst the Murdochs will still have their Sport and News Networks it give up its entertainment division to Disney. Meaning they would have control of the Avatar franchise, they will own all aspects of the Star Wars brand and, what fans are most excited about, Fox's Marvel films. Now, there are a fair few positives and negatives to this story, should it actually happen. Which we'll be discussing right now.
