Spider-Man Out of the MCU? - Situation Review

A couple of days ago it was revealed that re-negotiations between Sony and Disney around Spider-Man have fallen through and the character will be taken out of the MCU entirely. This has come as quite a shock to most fans, especially after the release of the latest movie Spider-Man: Far From Home (John Watts)  which recently passed the $1 Billion mark in the worldwide box office.     So what does this mean for the future of the beloved Superhero? Well in this Situation Review I will be discussing why Sony did what they did and several possibilities for what will happen with Spider-Man. Disney Vs Sony So, the decision comes after Disney wanted to change the deal that they had with Sony so that they would gain 50% of the overall gross of the Spider-Man movies, rather than the 5% that they were currently receiving. A move that Sony wasn't happy with.     Now, if they were only talking about the movies then this would seem like a fair deal. The...

Spider-Man: Far From Home Review (No Spider-Man spoilers, Endgame Spoilers)

So after the immense success of Avengers: Endgame (2019, Joe & Anthony Russo) , becoming the 2nd highest grossing movie of all time. And now, Marvel hopes to continue their ongoing story with Season 2 Episode 1. Spider-Man: Far From Home (Jon Watts) . The second movie in the MCU's new Spider-Man trilogy, which has proved incredibly popular with fans of both the MCU and Spider-Man in general. But with things like the events of Endgame to deal with, will this movie be weighed down by the weight of that movie? Or can it possibly hold its own? Marvel has had a pretty good run this year. Hopefully, it doesn't trip at the finish line. Initial Thoughts This is a damn good follow-up to Endgame . It's nowhere near as big in scope but it's definitely a good start to a new chapter in the MCU. Focusing more on the aftermath of Endgame and how Spider-Man is coping in a post-Iron Man world and trying to sort out his life as Peter Parker.  Spider-Man/Peter Parker/Tom Ho...

Top 9 Upcoming Superhero Movies in 2019 (100th Post!)

2018 was a huge year for Superhero movies. With game-changing movies such as Avengers: Infinity War (2018, Joe & Anthony Russo)  breaking box office records, Sony having a surprise success with their Spider-Man properties and DC showing they're still in the game with Aquaman (2018, James Wan) . And now 2019 brings a whole new slate of movies. From Meta-reflections of the genre to major storylines coming to an end. And even some studios taking risks with their properties, which is pretty good! So here is the list of Superhero movies coming out. Ranked from what I am least excited for to what I'm most excited for. 9. Glass The first movie on this list that's scheduled to come out this year is M. Night Shyamalan's long-awaited follow-up to his cult hit Unbreakable (2000) . After Split (2016)  turned out to be a backdoor sequel to Unbreakable  fans have been awaiting the release of Glass . Bruce Willis (Die Hard, the 6th Sense) and Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fict...

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Review (No Spoilers)

It's safe to say that 2018 has been a good year for Spider-Man. Like a really good year! He was in Avengers: Infinity war (2018, Joe & Anthony Russo)  he had a very popular video game released on the PS4 and now he has his own animated movie. But it's also been a good year for Miles Morales, who featured in the video game and is the main character of this animated movie. With Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, 21 Jump Street)  at the helm, this should be an interesting take on the character! But will mainstream audiences be open to this different version of Spider-Man? And will audiences pay to see it as an animated movie? First Thoughts This is not just the best Spider-Man movie I have ever watched but one of the best animated movies I have ever seen. The characters are fun to watch, the art and animation are beyond stunning and it truly understands its source material. This feels like a Spider-Man comic and it's perfect! Miles Morales/Ultim...

Spider-Verse Sequel & Spin-off? Situation Review

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018, Peter Ramsay, Robert Persichetti Jr., Rodney Rothman)  hasn't even hit theatres yet and, according to The Hollywood Reporter , Sony Studios are already planning both a sequel and a spin-off. According to the article, the sequel will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Voltron) and will be written by David Callaham (Expendables 2, Wonder Woman 84) . Sony is also eyeing Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One, Voltron) to helm the spin-off. Initial Thoughts Sony must be very confident with their upcoming movie if their green-lighting these projects prior to its release! I imagine that Sony is dropping this news in advance in order to improve on the box-office tracking for Into The Spider-Verse  which, at the moment, is crammed in a very busy Holiday line-up, alongside Aquaman (2018, James Wan)  and Mary Poppins Returns (2018, Rob Marshall) , which seem to be the two big contenders this year. So this...

Sony's Spider-Verse: Situation Review

Sony has taken its first step in its new Spider-Man related films with Venom (2017, Ruben Fleischer). Which has been moderately successful so far. Because of this, I thought I would go over the other the state of the Spider-Man films that Sony has both ready for release and in production. Including Venom , the studio has Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018, Phil Lord & Chris Miller) coming out this December, Solo movies for Black Cat and Silver Sable and a solo movie for Morbius: The Living Vampire. All characters featured in the Spider-Man comics.  Venom Venom has taken a serious hit from critics. with a 31% approval rating from critics. Normally, this would be enough to kill a film. But, surprisingly, Venom has had quite a successful run at the Box Office, grossing just over $380 million worldwide by its 2nd weekend. Venom also is boasting a strong 88% approval rating from audiences. Giving Sony good cause to greenlight a sequel. Although, it's unclea...

Top 10 MCU films

With Avengers: Infinity War (2018, Joe Russo/Anthony Russo)  about to hit theatres I thought it would be good to look back on the long road travelled and pick the top 10 films produced by Marvel Studios. Just to clarify, this list is completely subjective so this list may differ from your own personal list. Also, I will only be focusing on the films that are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So any films made by Fox or Sony won't make the cut. 10. Doctor Strange The Introduction of magic into the MCU, Doctor Strange (2016, Scott Derrickson)  is a fun watch. Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, The Imitation Game)  does a fine job as the titular character and has a really good message of picking yourself up and rebuilding yourself when you've hit a really low point in life. The film also sports some very good visually interesting use of magic, with fight scenes that are quite suspenseful and more action-packed, unlike other fantasy films where two characters just...
