Sony's Spider-Verse: Situation Review

Sony has taken its first step in its new Spider-Man related films with Venom (2017, Ruben Fleischer). Which has been moderately successful so far. Because of this, I thought I would go over the other the state of the Spider-Man films that Sony has both ready for release and in production. Including Venom, the studio has Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018, Phil Lord & Chris Miller) coming out this December, Solo movies for Black Cat and Silver Sable and a solo movie for Morbius: The Living Vampire. All characters featured in the Spider-Man comics.

Venom

Venom has taken a serious hit from critics. with a 31% approval rating from critics. Normally, this would be enough to kill a film. But, surprisingly, Venom has had quite a successful run at the Box Office, grossing just over $380 million worldwide by its 2nd weekend. Venom also is boasting a strong 88% approval rating from audiences. Giving Sony good cause to greenlight a sequel. Although, it's unclear as to whether Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road, Legend) will be willing to return for a sequel, given the critical reception that the film has received. Hopefully, Sony can persuade him otherwise.

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

The next Spider-Man related film Sony is set to release is the animated feature Spider-Man: Into The Spider-verse). Focusing primarily on the Ultimate Marvel Comics version of Spider-Man: Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) whilst also featuring other alternate versions of Spider-Man, such as Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn) and Spider-Ham (John Mulaney). From the trailers, this film looks amazing. It's visually stunning, the comedy is great and the action looks unlike anything seen before in an animated film before.
The film is set to release in December, just in time for Christmas, and hopes to target the family audience. The fact that it's an animated film should give it an edge in that. However, the film also has a lot of competition as this December is packed with hotly anticipated films, such as Aquaman (2018, James Wan), Marry Poppins Returns, Bumblebee (2018, Travis Knight) and The Mortal Engines (2018, Christian Rivers). So the film needs to be able to stand out from the crowd if it is to make as big a splash at the box office.

Black Cat & Silver Sable Solo Movies

If Venom is Sony's answer to Deadpool than these two are their answer to Wonder Woman (2017, Patty Jenkins). Featuring two of the most popular female heroes in the Spider-Man comics, Black Cat and Silver Sable. Whilst the two were supposed to star in a movie together it seems that the movie has been cancelled in favour for them to have solo movies instead. Which is probably a better idea, as the two haven't really shared a lot of time together in the comics.
Whilst I would have liked the two to share a movie, as I think they would have good chemistry together, I can definitely see both of them being able to carry their own solo movies. Both characters have strong fan bases that would support these movies. However, seeing as their team-up movie was in Production Hell for a while, I wouldn't expect any big announcements about them any time soon.

Morbius

The more recently announced Sony-Verse movie is Morbius. Starring Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Suicide Squad) as the main protagonist. Not a lot has been said about this project, apart from Leto being attached. Although, I wonder how this will affect his role as The Joker in the DCEU. After taking a critical bashing in Suicide Squad (2017, David Ayer), and with the new Joker Solo movie, starring Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator, Walk The Line) being viewed as looking better than Leto's version of the character, does Leto really want to take on another Comic Book property? Maybe he could do both. But I seriously doubt it.
Also, I'm not sure how promising a Morbius film would be. The character does have his fans but I'm not sure how popular he would be with general audiences. Overall, I don't expect this film to go as far as pre-production.

So that's my Situation Review of Sony's Spider-Verse. What do you think of these films? Do you agree or disagree with anything that I said? Leave a comment down below and we'll discuss. And, if you liked what you've read, then you can follow this blog for more content. Thank you for reading!

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Review (No Spoilers)

The final episode in the sequel trilogy, and the overall Skywalker Saga, is finally out! Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019, J.J Abrams) will hopefully answer the questions that have been set up since the beginning of this trilogy in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015, J.J Abrams) . But due to fans being displeased with this new trilogy, such as the highly negative response from fans after the previous instalment Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017, Rian Johnson)  and with the latest anthology movie Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018, Ron Howard) being a financial disaster, can this movie live up to the success of its predecessors and redeem the franchise in the eyes of fans? First Thoughts This movie is good, I liked it as a movie. The action's good, the visuals are great and the characters are fun to watch. But as a finale to the overall Skywalker Saga, it's quite disappointing. The story feels more like it's trying to make up for lost time rather than tell a good stor...

Auteurship: David Fincher

The Auteur theory is that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision.  I am going to use  David Fincher as an example, because he usually has similar aspects throughout all of his films such as bleakness of a setting; several single frames that flash, low-key lighting and characters that are in the shadows so you can’t see their faces. All of these styles can be found in Fight Club (1999). In most of Fincher’s films the settings seem to have a bleak and uninteresting look to them. In Fight Club this is shown in places like the office of where Jack works, the cancer support group hall, Jack’s apartment. All of these places are just different shades of the same colour (mainly green, grey or dark orange). This is to convey a sense of misery and darkness within the storyline, which the characters are just drifting through their lives. Something that Fincher portrays beautifully in Fight Club. This is a good example of David Fincher’s position as an Au...

Batman & Harley Quinn: Review (SPOILERS)

For anyone who is a big fan of Batman, Bruce Timm is perhaps one of the most influential creative minds behind the character. Both him and Paul Dini were the head writers on the Animated Series from the 90's. A show that is the starting platform for many Batman fans and still has a lasting impression on the Batman mythos. The show introduced everyone to Mark Hamill's take on The Joker, which many consider being the definitive voice of The Joker, it drastically changed Mr. Freeze's origins from being a daft, D-List character into arguably Batman's most sympathetic villains in the Emmy-Winning episode Heart Of Ice (1992) . And, most importantly, the animated series is the birthplace of Harley Quinn. Whilst originally meant to be a simple sidekick to The Joker, Harley Quinn took on a life of her own. Today she is arguably the most popular female comic book character in the medium. And now Bruce Timm has returned to the continuity of the Animated show and has created a n...
