Top 10 Superhero film of 2018

And so the Superhero Genre continues with another year of films! 2017 saw Marvel continue in great success with some of its big franchises, such as Guardians Of The Galaxy and Thor: Ragnarok and DC saw great success with Wonder Woman and unfortunate problems with Justice League. But next year sees the genre grow even bigger! With both new heroes, continuations of heroes and some Ani-Heroes joining the field!

10. New Mutants (April 13th)

The only reason that this film is at the bottom of my list is that, whilst I was interested in the Trailer, I was not impressed by it. However, I do appreciate experimentation in cinema. And this is definitely quite a new take on the Superhero genre. By adding a horror element to the mix. New Mutants centres around a group of mutants inside a secret facility and coming to terms with their abilities. Maisie Williams (Game Of Thrones, iBoy) and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things, Shut In). It looks interesting and I'm sure it'll stand out from the rest of the Superhero films this year. Primarily for how different it is.

9. Ant-Man & The Wasp (August 3rd)

The sequel to the sleeper-hit of 2015. Ant-Man & The Wasp focuses on Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van-Dyme (Evangeline Lily) teaming up to face a new threat. Michelle Pfeiffer (Batman Returns, Scarface) joins the cast as the Long-lost mother of Hope, Janet Van-Dyme. Whilst Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, Man Of Steel) joins as the Longtime friend of Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), Goliath! Expect more fun and action from the smallest Superhero.

8. Venom (October 5th)

A film centred around one of Comic's most well-known Anti-Hero, and is meant to kick off its own separate Superhero Universe with fan-favourite characters from the Spider-Man comics. Just... Without Spider-Man... Well, it should be interesting. Venom has Tom Hardy as the titular character, whether he's playing Eddie Brock or another character with the Alien Symbiote has yet to be disclosed. But Hardy, even at his weakest, brings in a good performance! So this should be another interesting Superhero film.

7. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (December 13th)

Yet another Spider-Man related project! This time the web-slinger comes in animated form and will not focus on Peter Parker, but Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) as Spider-Man. A character that many have been wanting to see the character on the big screen for a while now. And whilst some are a bit disappointed that he's only in animated form, it's still good to see the character on film. The first trailer came out and it looks absolutely beautiful. It's difficult to be entranced by the stunning visuals in the trailer! Hopefully, the film can deliver what the trailer has promised.

6. Black Panther (February 16th)

After his successful debut in Captain America: Civil War (2016, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo). Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) is returning to the big screen in his solo film. After the events of Civil War, T'Challa must come to terms with his new role as king of Wakanda. Whilst a new threat falls on his doorstep in the shape of Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) and Ulysses Claw (Andy Serkis). Ryan Coogler (Creed, Fruitvale Station) is taking up directing and duties, and from the high quality of Creed (2015), I have no doubt this will be a fan-favourite for many!

5. X-Men: Dark Phoenix (November 2nd)

The X-Men franchise takes a second stab at the Dark Phoenix Saga. This time with Sophie Turner's (Game Of Thrones, Barely Lethal) version of Jean Grey. Whilst we only have an article from Entertainment Weekly to go on, Sophie Turner's Phoenix look actually looks pretty cool. Plus, most of what they do reveal in terms of the plot is more faithful to the source material than X-Men: The Last Stand (2006, Brett Ratner). Long-time X-Men film writer Simon Kinberg steps up for directing duties. Whether that's a good idea or not is yet to be decided. But this film should be pretty good, much like the more recent X-Men films. And should act as an apology for all those who hated The Last Stand.

4. Aquaman (December 21st)

Sadly, this is the only DC project lined up for 2018, ever since The Flash had to be put on hold. But this film is shaping up to be a strong contender in the Superhero market! Jason Momoa (Game Of Thrones, Justice League) returns as Aquaman, along with Amber Heard (The Rum Diary, Drive Angry) to face against villains such as Aquaman's half-brother, Ocean Master (Patrick Wilson) and the psychotic Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II). James Wan (Furious 7, The Conjuring) is directing, and he hasn't made a bad film yet, so the film has that going for it! Plus, after hearing the description of the footage shown for this film at Comic-Con, it seems to be inspired by the Throne Of Atlantis (2013) storyline. Which is good because that was a great story! Hopefully, the film can live up to that!

3. Deadpool 2 (June 1st)

The Merc with the Mouth returns! This time swapping director Tim Miller (Gopher Broke, The Goon) for David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde). So expect a lot more action! Which will probably be more similar to that in John Wick, which is great because that film has A+ action scenes! Whilst the trailers reveal... next to nothing about the plot or the characters, it does show Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) on top form in terms of comedy. So it's good that they haven't toned that down at all. Whilst expectations for this film are quite high I have faith that it will indeed deliver!

2. Incredibles 2 (June 15th)

A sequel 14 years in the making! Pixar gives us more from the Superhero family that everybody loves! The trailer doesn't reveal much but it does feature an adorable, if not scary, look at Jack-Jack's powers, which at this point, seem to be limitless. The film kicks off right where the first one left it. This time, Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) is going out on missions and saving the world whilst Mr Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) must stay at home and try dealing with 3 super-powered children. Fans have been waiting many years for an Incredibles sequel and now we have it! Let's hope that it reaches expectations.

1. Avengers: Infinity War (April 27th)

If Deadpool 2 and The Incredibles 2 have high expectation to live up to then they are nothing compared to Avengers: Infinity War! The event that's been building up since The Avengers (2012, Joss Whedon). And has been building up further and further with every Marvel film that has been released since. Infinity War sees the entire roster of Marvel Superheroes come together, to a scale that has never been seen before, to take on the all-powerful Thanos (Josh Brolin). With the first trailer already breaking records for the most-watched trailer on YouTube within 24 hours, you can expect this film to be the biggest film of 2018!

So this my list of all the Superhero films coming out this year from what I feel is the least exciting to the most exciting. Did you agree? Do you think some films deserve to be higher on this list? If so then please leave a comment. And, if you liked this post then follow this blog for more content. Thank you for reading. :)

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Review (No Spoilers)

The final episode in the sequel trilogy, and the overall Skywalker Saga, is finally out! Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019, J.J Abrams) will hopefully answer the questions that have been set up since the beginning of this trilogy in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015, J.J Abrams) . But due to fans being displeased with this new trilogy, such as the highly negative response from fans after the previous instalment Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017, Rian Johnson)  and with the latest anthology movie Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018, Ron Howard) being a financial disaster, can this movie live up to the success of its predecessors and redeem the franchise in the eyes of fans? First Thoughts This movie is good, I liked it as a movie. The action's good, the visuals are great and the characters are fun to watch. But as a finale to the overall Skywalker Saga, it's quite disappointing. The story feels more like it's trying to make up for lost time rather than tell a good stor...

Man of Steel-Review

2013 marks the 75th anniversary of the very first Superhero: Superman, and in honour of this iconic character DC and Warner Bros. have rebooted the franchise for a film, and it came out looking amazing! This film had so many great qualities to it that made it so beautiful. such as the mesmerizing SFX, the awesome action, the high standard acting and more. This is definitely a film that will be remembered for years to come. The film starts off on Krypton, where Scientist Jor-El (Russell Crowe) is pleading to the world's council about the destruction of the planet. Already we are shown a Krypton that has been brought to death due to individuals believing themselves to be like Gods without consequence. This is a theme throughout the whole film that Kryptonians believed themselves to be like Gods, as is presented through the fact that Kryptonians are grown rather than naturally birthed, the extraction of the Krypton's core for energy and through General Zod who values one group o...

Auteurship: David Fincher

The Auteur theory is that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision.  I am going to use  David Fincher as an example, because he usually has similar aspects throughout all of his films such as bleakness of a setting; several single frames that flash, low-key lighting and characters that are in the shadows so you can’t see their faces. All of these styles can be found in Fight Club (1999). In most of Fincher’s films the settings seem to have a bleak and uninteresting look to them. In Fight Club this is shown in places like the office of where Jack works, the cancer support group hall, Jack’s apartment. All of these places are just different shades of the same colour (mainly green, grey or dark orange). This is to convey a sense of misery and darkness within the storyline, which the characters are just drifting through their lives. Something that Fincher portrays beautifully in Fight Club. This is a good example of David Fincher’s position as an Au...
