Captain Marvel: Trailer Highlights

The first trailer for Captain Marvel (2019, Anna Boden/Ryan Fleck) has arrived! Marvel's answer to Wonder Woman (2017, Patty Jenkins). Set 20 years prior to the current MCU films, we follow Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) as she battles against the Skrull, a race of aliens that invade planets by disguising themselves as the indigenous population.

First Thoughts

This trailer looks good. I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's great. There are a few things that hold it back a bit. But it still has me more interested in the film. It's also worth mentioning that Marvel has changed Captain Marvel's origins. Whilst they've kept the part o her being an airforce pilot given superpowers, they've also added some things. Such as giving her amnesia and making her a Kree soldier. This is probably so separate her from DC's Green Lantern, which she shares some uncanny similarities too. But overall. I do like this trailer.

1. Captain Marvel Lands

The trailer opens with Captain Marvel herself crash-landing on Earth, and I really like that she lands in Blockbuster Video. A little bit of nostalgia for older audiences and a good way of establishing that this film takes place in the past. At first, I thought that this scene would be around the halfway/end of the second act of the film. But as the trailer progressed it's abundantly clear that Marvel Studios have tweaked Captain Marvel's Origins. Now she seems to be a Kree soldier who has forgotten her life on Earth. Because of this, this scene in Blockbuster could possibly be around the first third of the film instead.

2. Nick Fury Returns!

Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Snakes On A Plane) returns as Nick Fury. Now a lot younger and less-experienced. In the trailer, he mentions that he was thinking of retiring from Government Service until he meets Captain Marvel. So I'm guessing that this is his first step into the world of Superheroes. It will be interesting to see how this changes his character, depending on how different he is from his present-day counterpart when this movie begins.

3. Jude Law as Mar-Vell

The Trailer gives us a slightly better look at Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes, The Young Pope) as Mar-Vell (The original Captain Marvel in the comics). As I said before in my coverage of the Entertainment Weekly stills for this film, I'm not sure why Mar-Vell looks so human when he's a Kree Soldier, meaning he should look more like Ronan The Accusor (Lee Pace). Although, I'm digging the yellow eyes! Is it weird to say that Jude Law suits yellow eyes? Because he does! Apparently, he had yellow eyes in the EW coverage and I completely missed it. I can't wait to see how they handle this character, as people seem to have forgotten him in the comics.

4. The Mask

Here's something I didn't expect to see in this film! The helmet that Captain Marvel occasionally wears. It gives her this pretty cool mohawk look, as her hair is free on the top of the helmet, and makes her look pretty intimidating. Although, the helmet in this one seems to be one she's borrowed as it's clearly not designed for her face. The nose guard doesn't cover her whole nose

5. POWER!

Yeah! I bet you didn't know that Captain Marvel could go Super Saiyan! Haha, I'm just kidding. No, this is Captain Marvel's Binary form, which is incredibly powerful! Almost to the point where she's unstoppable. And, since she's wearing her classic red and blue costume in this shot, it's highly likely that this will be in the third act. Possibly having a Thor-level of mic drop moment! (See Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War to understand what I'm talking about). Overall, I love this shot. It looks comic book accurate and Captain Marvel looks incredible!

Conclusion

This is a good trailer. Brie Larson looks good as Captain Marvel, the changes made to the origin are made clear and are interesting. Although there are some parts where the action doesn't look that great (Like the shot of her on the train) then there are some really good shots, such as her binary form. I'm also really interested in how characters like Nick Fury and Mar-Vell are handled, as it will be cool to see how much they differ from what audiences already know.

So those are my trailer highlights for Captain Marvel. What did you think of the trailer? Do you agree or disagree with anything that I said? Leave a comment down below. And, if you liked what you've read then you can follow this blog for more content. Thank you for reading. :)

Auteurship: David Fincher

The Auteur theory is that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision.  I am going to use  David Fincher as an example, because he usually has similar aspects throughout all of his films such as bleakness of a setting; several single frames that flash, low-key lighting and characters that are in the shadows so you can’t see their faces. All of these styles can be found in Fight Club (1999). In most of Fincher’s films the settings seem to have a bleak and uninteresting look to them. In Fight Club this is shown in places like the office of where Jack works, the cancer support group hall, Jack’s apartment. All of these places are just different shades of the same colour (mainly green, grey or dark orange). This is to convey a sense of misery and darkness within the storyline, which the characters are just drifting through their lives. Something that Fincher portrays beautifully in Fight Club. This is a good example of David Fincher’s position as an Au...

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Review (No Spoilers)

The final episode in the sequel trilogy, and the overall Skywalker Saga, is finally out! Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019, J.J Abrams) will hopefully answer the questions that have been set up since the beginning of this trilogy in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015, J.J Abrams) . But due to fans being displeased with this new trilogy, such as the highly negative response from fans after the previous instalment Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017, Rian Johnson)  and with the latest anthology movie Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018, Ron Howard) being a financial disaster, can this movie live up to the success of its predecessors and redeem the franchise in the eyes of fans? First Thoughts This movie is good, I liked it as a movie. The action's good, the visuals are great and the characters are fun to watch. But as a finale to the overall Skywalker Saga, it's quite disappointing. The story feels more like it's trying to make up for lost time rather than tell a good stor...

Oz: The great and Powerful Review

When I first heard that this film was being made I was very skeptical. The Original film with Dorothy and the wicked witch was an important part of many people's childhood that it seemed that this prequel couldn't live up to it. But after seeing it at the cinema my skepticism was laid to rest. This film is AWESOME!!!    The film follows a similar structure narrative-wise to that of the Wizard of Oz. You start off with in Kansas where everything is in black-and-white, keeping to continuity, then you have the twister that takes the character to the land of Oz. The audience is then introduced important characters like Theodora and Evanora, we even get the journey down the yellow-brick road. The writers have brilliantly taken all these elements from the previous film and used them to create a contemporary origin to the Oz that children were introduced too in 1939.    James Franco was well cast in this role as a rude and selfish magician who w...
