Captain Marvel: First Look - Image Analysis

Yesterday Entertainment Weekly released an exclusive first look at Marvel's latest upcoming film, Captain Marvel (2019, Anna Boen, Ryan Fleck) featuring first looks at Brie Larson (Room, Kong: Skull Island) as the main protagonist, Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes, Young Pope) as Mar-Vell and the antagonists, the Skrull. This film will also set up Captain Marvel for the 4th Avengers film, which Captain Marvel was teased in the final scene.

For this post, I haven't examined all of the stills revealed I've chosen the five that I think are worth talking about the most. Also, if you wish to read the official release from Entertainment Weekly, then click the link here.  https://ew.com/movies/captain-marvel-first-look-images/

1.

Our first official look at the Captain Marvel costume! And it is a vast improvement from those leaked photos that were released earlier this year. It still looks a little bit like a variation of Captain America's costume, but I'm willing to look past that. I also really like the pose that Brie Larson is pulling in this photo. She looks ready for action! And with a bit of an edge to her. Larson said in the coverage that Carol Danvers will have a bit of a temper and will be something of a MAverick-type character. Which sounds a little bit like Green Lantern from DC, so hopefully Marvel can differentiate her from that character! Overall, I really like the way Brie Larson looks as Captain Marvel.

2.

Here we get our first look at Jude Law as Mar-Vell, the first Captain Marvel. Wearing the same green uniform as we saw in the leaked stills. And it turns out that even Jude Law looks bad in this outfit. I'm also quite surprised that Law hasn't been given prosthetics for his face, as he's meant to be a Kree soldier. Perhaps he's been re-imagined as a human? Maybe Jude Law didn't want any prosthetics. Although, I don't know why. I don't think He'd be too worried about people not recognising him. Also, we see Ronan The Accuser (Lee Pace) Pre-Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014, James Gunn). So probably not as dangerous as he was in that film! It'll be interesting to see if this film dives into why Ronan became a terrorist. MAinly because it wasn't explained that well in Guardians.

3.

Following on from the previous pic, we see Star-Force meeting with Mar-Vell and Ronan and finally proving that this uniform simply doesn't look good on anyone. Overall, the whole Star-Force look okay, although I'm a little worried that they look like The Guardians Of The Galaxy.  For instance, Minerva (Gemma Chan) on the far right looks a little bit like Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Marvel might be at risk of diluting their own brand. They will have to make this group quite different. Also, it's interesting that Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator, Blood Diamond) is in both this film for Marvel and DC's Shazam (David Sandberg) whose main character used to be called Captain Marvel!

4.

Nick Fury is back! Now in a digitally de-aged performance from Samuel L. Jackson. To be honest, this digitally de-ageing looks pretty good. Marvel has ad experience in making their actors look younger in the past, but this is probably the best they've done. It's unclear as to whether or not Fury will lose his eye in this film, although that scar he has will be the least of his problems in the long run. I look forward to seeing a younger, less- experienced Nick Fury and whether or not we get to see him become the agent of S.H.I.E.L.D that we know and love!

5.

And now we get our first look at the film's antagonists, the Skrull! Shape-shifting aliens that invade worlds by posing as the indigenous species. Even going as far as to replicate a person's powers. Making them even more formidable! And... They do not look that good. When I first saw this image I mistook it for a still from a TV show like Krypton or The Orville (Good shows btw, I highly recommend watching them). I wouldn't really expect this kind of costume for a big-budget blockbuster like Captain Marvel. Hopefully, their storyline in this film will help me look past that.

So that's my Image Analysis of the Captain Marvel official first look. What do you think of the stills? Do you agree or disagree with anything I said? Please leave a comment down below. And, if you like what you've read, then you can follow this blog for more content. Thank you for reading. :)

Auteurship: David Fincher

The Auteur theory is that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision.  I am going to use  David Fincher as an example, because he usually has similar aspects throughout all of his films such as bleakness of a setting; several single frames that flash, low-key lighting and characters that are in the shadows so you can’t see their faces. All of these styles can be found in Fight Club (1999). In most of Fincher’s films the settings seem to have a bleak and uninteresting look to them. In Fight Club this is shown in places like the office of where Jack works, the cancer support group hall, Jack’s apartment. All of these places are just different shades of the same colour (mainly green, grey or dark orange). This is to convey a sense of misery and darkness within the storyline, which the characters are just drifting through their lives. Something that Fincher portrays beautifully in Fight Club. This is a good example of David Fincher’s position as an Au...

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Review (No Spoilers)

The final episode in the sequel trilogy, and the overall Skywalker Saga, is finally out! Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019, J.J Abrams) will hopefully answer the questions that have been set up since the beginning of this trilogy in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015, J.J Abrams) . But due to fans being displeased with this new trilogy, such as the highly negative response from fans after the previous instalment Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017, Rian Johnson)  and with the latest anthology movie Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018, Ron Howard) being a financial disaster, can this movie live up to the success of its predecessors and redeem the franchise in the eyes of fans? First Thoughts This movie is good, I liked it as a movie. The action's good, the visuals are great and the characters are fun to watch. But as a finale to the overall Skywalker Saga, it's quite disappointing. The story feels more like it's trying to make up for lost time rather than tell a good stor...

Oz: The great and Powerful Review

When I first heard that this film was being made I was very skeptical. The Original film with Dorothy and the wicked witch was an important part of many people's childhood that it seemed that this prequel couldn't live up to it. But after seeing it at the cinema my skepticism was laid to rest. This film is AWESOME!!!    The film follows a similar structure narrative-wise to that of the Wizard of Oz. You start off with in Kansas where everything is in black-and-white, keeping to continuity, then you have the twister that takes the character to the land of Oz. The audience is then introduced important characters like Theodora and Evanora, we even get the journey down the yellow-brick road. The writers have brilliantly taken all these elements from the previous film and used them to create a contemporary origin to the Oz that children were introduced too in 1939.    James Franco was well cast in this role as a rude and selfish magician who w...
