Black Widow Solo Film: Situation Analysis

Wednesday night it was announced that Jac Schaeffer would be writing the Black Widow Solo film. A film that fans of the Marvel Heroine have been demanding for quite some time! Now it appears that Marvel Studios are finally answering the call with this announcement! Whilst this is not a confirmation that the film has been greenlit, it is still a step forward for the project. Also, there isn't a lot to go on at the moment, we will analyse what exactly got Marvel to take further steps with Black Widow.

Scarlett Johansson

Black Widow is perhaps Scarlet Johansson's (Lost In Translation, Lucy) biggest role. And has gained a serious fan following. And yet, whilst being one of the founding members of The Avengers (2015, Joss Whedon) and starring in a supporting role in other Marvel solo films, she still hasn't had her own film. Fans were hopeful that one would be announced after Lucy(2014. Luc Besson) where she showed her promise as a lead actress in positive reviews and very good box office returns. But then it seemed that hopes might have thrashed with Ghost In The Shell (2017, Rupert Saunders) which was hated by fans of the original manga and received terrible box office returns. However, Johansson's contract is soon to expire at Marvel after Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 (2019, Joe & Anthony Russo). So perhaps the reason for getting things underway for a Black Widow solo film as a way of getting her to stay.

Wonder Woman

Probably a huge factor in progress with  Black Widow is Wonder Woman (2017, Patty Jenkins). That film proved once and for all that a female-led superhero can be a success! Fans and critics loved it and it became the highest grossing Superhero Origin film of all time. After years of female-led Superhero films such as Catwoman (2004, Pitof) and Elektra (2005, Rob Bowman) failing to connect with audiences. But now Wonder Woman has paved the way for more female-led Superhero films. Wonder Woman 2 (2019, Patty Jenkins) has been greenlit, Sony is hoping to make a film centred around Spider-Man characters Black Cat and Silver Sable called Silver & Black (2019), and Marvel is even getting in on the action with Captain Marvel (2019, Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck). So now seems like a good time to release a Black Widow Solo film!

Jac Schaeffer

So Jac Schaeffer is an unknown, relatively upcoming screenwriter. She's had some reasonable success with her films TiMER (2009) and Mr Stache (2011). However, these aren't really enough to clarify what kind of script the Black Widow film will be like. However, she has written the script for Nasty Women (2018, Chris Addison) which is a female re-make of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988, Frank Oz). Which stars Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables, The Dark Knight Rises) and Rebel Wilson (How To Be Single, Pitch Perfect) which will probably give more of an idea to the quality of the script. If it's good then it has some reassurance, if not then Marvel might want to worry. But Marvel Studios have yet to put out a film that hasn't pleased fans so I imagine Schaeffer's script should be good in that regard.

Conclusion

Whilst this announcement gives away very little to what kind of film Black Widow is going to be like, it's really good that the film is actually making some steps forward. Fans have been demanding it for a while and it seemed like Ghost In The Shell nearly destroyed any hope of ever seeing one on the big screen. I have no doubt that fans will be pleased with it. Also, it's really great to see a lot of female-led Superhero film being made thanks to the success of Wonder Woman.

So that's my situation analysis of the Black Widow announcement. Is there anything that I missed out? Are you excited about the film? What do you think of Jac Schaeffer as the writer? And what do you think of this new wave of Female Superhero films? Be sure to leave a comment down below. And, if you liked this post then please follow this blog for more content. Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Review (No Spoilers)

The final episode in the sequel trilogy, and the overall Skywalker Saga, is finally out! Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019, J.J Abrams) will hopefully answer the questions that have been set up since the beginning of this trilogy in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015, J.J Abrams) . But due to fans being displeased with this new trilogy, such as the highly negative response from fans after the previous instalment Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017, Rian Johnson)  and with the latest anthology movie Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018, Ron Howard) being a financial disaster, can this movie live up to the success of its predecessors and redeem the franchise in the eyes of fans? First Thoughts This movie is good, I liked it as a movie. The action's good, the visuals are great and the characters are fun to watch. But as a finale to the overall Skywalker Saga, it's quite disappointing. The story feels more like it's trying to make up for lost time rather than tell a good stor...

Aladdin Movie Review (No Spoilers)

Aladdin (1992, Ron Clements/Jon Musker)  is one of the standout animated movies of the Disney Renaissance that took place in the '90s. With hit songs, like A Whole New World , and a Performances from Robin Williams (Hook, Good Will Hunting)  as the Genie. And now, with Disney producing Live-action of their animated classics, a Live-Action Aladdin seemed inevitable. But with Guy Ritchie directing (Rock'N'Rolla, Sherlock Holmes) having something a spotty track record at the box office, and with his last movie King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword  being bashed by critics. Not to mention the lacklustre first reactions to the promotional material of this movie. Should Disney be concerned with how this performs with critics and the box office? Or will this movie's nostalgia factor be enough to get it through all that? Initial Thoughts I really enjoyed this movie! From the trailers and TV Spots, this movie kinda looks like a shallow reimagining of the animated origina...

Spider-Man: Homecoming Review (SPOILERS)

Spider-Man has quite a few ups and downs since his first film in 2002. With the third movie derailing the original trilogy and then the controversial reboot in 2012. Now Spider-Man is now on his second reboot, with shared-custody between Marvel Studios/Disney and Sony. With Tom Holland coming into the role in last year's Captain America: Civil War  to tremendously positive results! With many calling him the highlight of that film. Now this version of Spider-man has been given his own solo film. With many hoping that it will bring Spider-Man back to his glory days in film. First Thoughts This film is fantastic! Really incorporating all of the elements that have made Spider-Man relatable for decades! The action is amazing, the humour is on-point (Particularly for a Spider-Man film) and the storyline is so fitting for the character! I really enjoyed the John Hughes-Inspiration that they took for this film. Giving it more of a coming-of-age feel, which is great because the f...
