Solo: A Star Wars Story - Trailer Highlights #2

Wow, I did not expect this trailer on YouTube when I woke up this morning! In fact, I'd argue that a lot of people have actually forgotten that this film is even happening. The advertising for this film has been scarce. Plus its release date is dangerously close to that of Avengers: Infinity War (2018, Joe & Anthony Russo) and Deadpool 2 (2018, David Leitch), two very anticipated films. So will Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018, Ron Howard) be able to turn a profit? Or will it be the first box office disaster in this new era of the Star Wars franchise? Only time will tell!

Initial Thoughts

This is actually a pretty fun trailer. It's got good music, good editing, good action sequences and pretty good characters! The only issue, once again, is that the trailer is still hiding Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich), the main character. Almost like it's ashamed of him. Which is a shame. I already went over how Ehrenreich can't live up to his predecessor's (Harrison Ford) performance in the first Trailer Highlights. But other than that, it looks like a good film. If you haven't already seen the trailer then here it is:

1. Enfys Nest

This is a new character and one that is shrouded in mystery. Little is known about her character, only that she'll play some form of antagonistic role. In this scene, she and her gang of marauders seem to be at odds with Han. I quite like this character design, she looks intimidating and dangerous, like she can cause some serious damage. But, on the other hand, Star doesn't exactly have the best track-record with characters like this. Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) was hyped up to be a serious threat in the main trilogy, but that didn't really seem to work out. Perhaps Lucasfilm has learned their lesson and will actually give Enfys Nest some teeth!

2. Lando

Now, if anyone is doing a damn fine job in their role it's Donald Glover \(Community, Atlanta) who is embodying the same suave and charismatic traits that made the character memorable from the original trilogy. This is Lando back when he was a smuggler so we may be seeing some different sides of him that we haven't seen before. Perhaps a bit more untrusting and bit more sly. It's also interesting to note that he and Han seem to be in some kind of gambling game. Which is how Han got the Millenium Falcon from Lando. I'm kinda betting that this isn't that fatal game as it seems that this is when they first meet. And Lando is mainly flying the Falcon in parts of the trailer. Either way. We will definitely be seeing Lando lose the Falcon to Han in this film!

3. Dryden Vos

The gangster that Solo and the gang are targeting. Whether he's the main antagonist or not has yet to be confirmed. Personally, I don't think he looks that intimidating. When someone says "gangster" I usually imagine someone who looks like they can cause some damage when pushed. But Dryden Vos doesn't really scream that. Probably because of Paul Bettany (A Knight's Tale, Priest). Who really isn't that intimidating. Sure, he's got the facial scars but that only goes so far. Plus, he appears to have a similar wardrobe to Hux (Dohmnall Gleeson), one of the least intimidating antagonists in the Star Wars franchise! I hope Paul Bettany can surprise me, I do like his work. But at the momentI'm not seeing big, bad guy.

4. The Heist

I am loving the set-piece for this heist. I'm not sure if we've seen this kind of transport before in Star Wars but I really like it. A Sci-Fi take on the Train Heist scenario from Westerns. This seems to be the stage for the main action sequence in the film. We have characters inside the train, getting intel, we have characters outside trying to break in, there are stormtroopers, there appears to be a dogfight in the same setting, Chewie gets into a life-threatening situation. It looks like a lot of stuff is going to happen in this scene. So, if there's anything I'm really looking forward to in this film it's probably this scene!

5. Chewie's Age!

So this trailer also reveals a few things about Chewie that we haven't seen before! We see him interact with another Wookie, possibly a love interest judging by the romantic undertones between the two. But also, it's revealed that he's actually 190 years old! Which actually makes a lot of sense he's the only character who's been in all three Star Wars trilogies who hasn't seemed to have aged at all. So I'm glad that the film has clarified that a little! But I really like the relationship between Han and Chewie in this trailer. Ehrenreich may be having some trouble capturing Ford's magic as Han Solo, but his chemistry with Chewie is on point!

Conclusion

This is a good trailer. it highlights most of the characters well, it gives a better look at some of the action scenes and gives a bit more detail about the plot. It doesn't reveal what the plot is exactly,  I feel like they're keeping all spoilers and that under wraps, which is good! But, I'm still bothered by the fact that Alden Ehrenreich is still kept hidden in the trailers. Sure, he's not Harrison Ford, but he seems to be doing an alright job.

So those are my trailer highlights for Solo: A Star Wars Story. What do you think of the new trailer? Was there something I missed out? If so then leave a comment down below. And, if you liked this post then you can follow this blog for more content. Thank you for reading. :)

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker Review (No Spoilers)

The final episode in the sequel trilogy, and the overall Skywalker Saga, is finally out! Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker (2019, J.J Abrams) will hopefully answer the questions that have been set up since the beginning of this trilogy in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015, J.J Abrams) . But due to fans being displeased with this new trilogy, such as the highly negative response from fans after the previous instalment Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017, Rian Johnson)  and with the latest anthology movie Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018, Ron Howard) being a financial disaster, can this movie live up to the success of its predecessors and redeem the franchise in the eyes of fans? First Thoughts This movie is good, I liked it as a movie. The action's good, the visuals are great and the characters are fun to watch. But as a finale to the overall Skywalker Saga, it's quite disappointing. The story feels more like it's trying to make up for lost time rather than tell a good stor...

Auteurship: David Fincher

The Auteur theory is that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision.  I am going to use  David Fincher as an example, because he usually has similar aspects throughout all of his films such as bleakness of a setting; several single frames that flash, low-key lighting and characters that are in the shadows so you can’t see their faces. All of these styles can be found in Fight Club (1999). In most of Fincher’s films the settings seem to have a bleak and uninteresting look to them. In Fight Club this is shown in places like the office of where Jack works, the cancer support group hall, Jack’s apartment. All of these places are just different shades of the same colour (mainly green, grey or dark orange). This is to convey a sense of misery and darkness within the storyline, which the characters are just drifting through their lives. Something that Fincher portrays beautifully in Fight Club. This is a good example of David Fincher’s position as an Au...

Batman & Harley Quinn: Review (SPOILERS)

For anyone who is a big fan of Batman, Bruce Timm is perhaps one of the most influential creative minds behind the character. Both him and Paul Dini were the head writers on the Animated Series from the 90's. A show that is the starting platform for many Batman fans and still has a lasting impression on the Batman mythos. The show introduced everyone to Mark Hamill's take on The Joker, which many consider being the definitive voice of The Joker, it drastically changed Mr. Freeze's origins from being a daft, D-List character into arguably Batman's most sympathetic villains in the Emmy-Winning episode Heart Of Ice (1992) . And, most importantly, the animated series is the birthplace of Harley Quinn. Whilst originally meant to be a simple sidekick to The Joker, Harley Quinn took on a life of her own. Today she is arguably the most popular female comic book character in the medium. And now Bruce Timm has returned to the continuity of the Animated show and has created a n...
