Top 9 Upcoming Superhero Movies in 2019 (100th Post!)

2018 was a huge year for Superhero movies. With game-changing movies such as Avengers: Infinity War (2018, Joe & Anthony Russo) breaking box office records, Sony having a surprise success with their Spider-Man properties and DC showing they're still in the game with Aquaman (2018, James Wan). And now 2019 brings a whole new slate of movies. From Meta-reflections of the genre to major storylines coming to an end. And even some studios taking risks with their properties, which is pretty good! So here is the list of Superhero movies coming out. Ranked from what I am least excited for to what I'm most excited for.

9. Glass

The first movie on this list that's scheduled to come out this year is M. Night Shyamalan's long-awaited follow-up to his cult hit Unbreakable (2000). After Split (2016) turned out to be a backdoor sequel to Unbreakable fans have been awaiting the release of Glass. Bruce Willis (Die Hard, the 6th Sense) and Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained) return as their respected characters from the first movie and joining them is James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class, Filth) who is reprising his role as The Horde. This movie is sure to satisfy fans of the previous movies and those who enjoy a good satire of the Superhero genre.

8. X-Men: Dark Phoenix

A movie that I put on last years Superhero List, but was pushed back due to reshoots, and the Disney/Fox deal. But this looks like the final chapter in Fox's X-Men Universe. A movie series that has run since 2000. But, unfortunately, it seems that the series may end on more of a whimper than a bang. After the release of the first trailer, fans have been concerned with the way the Phoenix Saga is being handled in this movie. With many parallels being drawn with X-Men: The Last Stand (2006, Brett Ratner) which was also based on the Phoenix Saga and was received poorly by fans. But there are fans that are hoping that Fox, and director Simon Kinberg, can learn from past mistakes and do the famous storyline justice. Sophie Turner (Game Of Thrones) has proven to be a good Jean Grey so perhaps this movie will be an improvement from the last time Fox tried to adapt the storyline.

7. New Mutants

The other Fox Marvel movie that was pushed back to this year. New Mutants () blends the Superhero genre with the horror genre. For something that's quite different from other movies on this list. Starring popular actors such as Maisie Williams (Game Of Thrones), Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) this could be a surprise hit for audiences. Assuming it's eventually released.

6. The Joker Movie

For anyone who has read this blog, you will know that I think this movie is a bad idea. It's not part of the current DCEU and it features a different version to that continuity's Joker (Jared Leto). One that I think they should put their efforts into strengthening as critics were not kind to Leto's version. However, I cannot help but be intrigued by this movie. Todd Phillips (The Hangover, War Dogs) is an interesting choice to direct and Joaquin Phoenix (Her, The Master) actually does look good in the role.

5. Hellboy

After Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim) seemed to knock it out of the park with his two Hellboy movies. But after not being able to get Hellboy 3 off of the ground Lionsgate decided to reboot with a brand new creative team. Now with Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent) directing and David Harbour (Stranger Things) starring as the titular character, this is sure to be a movie that satisfies fans and general audiences.

4. Spider-Man: Far From Home

Continuing his hot streak from 2018 is Marvel's most popular Superhero, Spider-Man (Tom Holland)! After proving a huge hit with audiences, the MCU's version of Spider-Man gets his sequel. Now with Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Donni Darko) joining the cast as Mysterio, the main antagonist. And Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained) reprising his role as Nick Fury. This movie is sure to continue the hot streak that the character has been on for a while.

3. Shazam

The only DCEU entry for this year as Wonder Woman 84 (Patty Jenkins) was pushed back to 2020. Shazam (David Sandberg) didn't really have a lot of fans when it was first announced. But after the first trailer was released during San Diego Comic-Con audiences seemed to be quite interested! Zachary Levi (Chuck, Tangled) stars in the titular role as a child who turns into an adult superhero with powers similar to Superman by saying "SHAZAM!". This is a very different movie from older earlier DC projects. And, with the huge success of Aquaman (2018, James Wan), let's hope that DC can stay on high form!

2. Captain Marvel

And now for the other Captain Marvel (Brie Larson)! Yes, after the end credits scene in Infinity War fans are hoping to learn more about the power-house character. Brie Larson (Room, Kong: Skull Island) stars as the main protagonist, a US Air Force Pilot given extra-terrestrial powers by a race of warriors known as the Kree. Whilst the film seems to have changed the origins of the character it looks quite good. Particularly Captain Marvel's powers which seem pretty well realised! After the success of Wonder Woman (2017, Patty Jenkins) Proving that female-led Superhero movies can work, it's good to see other studios following in that movie's footsteps.

1. Avengers: Endgame

The movie that everyone is excited for! After the shocking ending of Avengers: Infinity War (2018, Joe & Anthony Russo) fans have been eagerly waiting to the conclusion of this epic story. With very little said about the movie, besides tons of fan speculation, but this is sure to be Marvel's biggest movie to date! With its predecessor breaking records and reaching the $2 Billion Mark, a feat only achieved by 3 movies in history, this movie has some big shoes to fill. Can it fill them? I believe it can!

Spider-Man Out of the MCU? - Situation Review

A couple of days ago it was revealed that re-negotiations between Sony and Disney around Spider-Man have fallen through and the character will be taken out of the MCU entirely. This has come as quite a shock to most fans, especially after the release of the latest movie Spider-Man: Far From Home (John Watts)  which recently passed the $1 Billion mark in the worldwide box office.     So what does this mean for the future of the beloved Superhero? Well in this Situation Review I will be discussing why Sony did what they did and several possibilities for what will happen with Spider-Man. Disney Vs Sony So, the decision comes after Disney wanted to change the deal that they had with Sony so that they would gain 50% of the overall gross of the Spider-Man movies, rather than the 5% that they were currently receiving. A move that Sony wasn't happy with.     Now, if they were only talking about the movies then this would seem like a fair deal. The two studios would split the c

SDCC 2018. Top Five Movie Trailers

SDCC has come and gone, and with it, a whole load of movie trailers have dropped for fans to sink their teeth into! Overall, it seems that Warner Bros. dominated the convention, bringing in new content from most of their divisions, such as DC, The Wizarding World and their Monster Universe. So, without further ado, here is my top 5 list of the movie trailers that were released this year for Comic-Con. 5. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald The hype for this new chapter in the Wizarding World continues with the latest trailer. Whilst the trailer doesn't really reveal a lot more than the previous trailer it does give us some good moments. The beginning with Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as a child showing his greatest fear is working behind a desk or that Dumbledore (Jude Law)  sees Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) in the Mirror of Erised. We even get to see new beasts, such as the strange cat creatures, and the first look at Nicholas Flemel, the creator of the Philosoph

Spider-Man: Far From Home Review (No Spider-Man spoilers, Endgame Spoilers)

So after the immense success of Avengers: Endgame (2019, Joe & Anthony Russo) , becoming the 2nd highest grossing movie of all time. And now, Marvel hopes to continue their ongoing story with Season 2 Episode 1. Spider-Man: Far From Home (Jon Watts) . The second movie in the MCU's new Spider-Man trilogy, which has proved incredibly popular with fans of both the MCU and Spider-Man in general. But with things like the events of Endgame to deal with, will this movie be weighed down by the weight of that movie? Or can it possibly hold its own? Marvel has had a pretty good run this year. Hopefully, it doesn't trip at the finish line. Initial Thoughts This is a damn good follow-up to Endgame . It's nowhere near as big in scope but it's definitely a good start to a new chapter in the MCU. Focusing more on the aftermath of Endgame and how Spider-Man is coping in a post-Iron Man world and trying to sort out his life as Peter Parker.  Spider-Man/Peter Parker/Tom Ho
