Top 10 Blockbusters To Look Out For In 2019

And so 2018 has come to a close and now we look to what this year has in store. With sequels to beloved films, remakes of beloved films, Spin-Offs to popular franchises and another shot at adapting video games! This is sure to be one Hell of a year!

Just as a disclaimer. There are no Superhero Movies in this list as they will have a list of their own published soon.

10. Frozen 2

The inevitable sequel to the Juggernaut that was Frozen (2013, Jennifer Lee, Chris Buck). Disney is hoping that lightning strikes twice with this next instalment. After the first one created a mini-empire within the Mouse-House. From merchandise to a theme park ride to mini shorts such as Frozen Fever (2015, Jennifer Lee, Chris Buck). This movie's synopsis is that Elsa and Anna will journey beyond Arendelle. So it looks like Disney are building on the first one, which is good as the first one felt quite isolated. However, after the huge amount of merchandise and a couple of short sequels, audiences might be a little fed up of Frozen and this sequel might not be as successful as its predecessor.

9. Toy Story 4

One of the more surprising entries on this list, Pixar's most successful franchise is back. Personally, I'm a little confused as to why we're getting a fourth instalment when the third movie seemed like a good end to the story. But I am interested as to where Pixar is going to go with this movie. The two trailers that have been released don't reveal much. Although, the inclusion of Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele (Key And Peele) and Keanu Reeves (John Wick, The Matrix) this is sure to be a fun movie for older and younger audiences.

8. Aladdin

One of three Disney remakes coming out in 2019, Aladdin (Guy Ritchie) has the eye of many audiences. After the Animated movie from the '90s became a fan favourite the live-action remake was inevitable. However, after the first look at the movie, not many fans are on board with this remake. With many concerned with the way characters look, particularly Will Smith (Men In Black, I, Robot) as the Genie, and director Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes, Snatch) at the helm of a project that seems quite different from his previous line of work. But there's still excitement around this movie, and Will Smith does have a huge fanbase and might be this movie's saving grace.

7. Detective Pikachu

One of the more interesting additions to this list. Detective Pikachu (Rob Letterman) was something that no one seemed to be interested in. But then the first trailer hit and suddenly everyone was on board! With the accurate look of the Pokemon to Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Van Wilder) as Detective Pikachu. This is sure to be a fun family movie for young audiences and a good movie for older fans of the Pokemon brand.

6. The Lion King

The second Live-Action (kind of) Remake Disney has in store for us in 2019 is The Lion King. This is arguably Disney's biggest movie, which is still popular to this day! And now Disney has brought on Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Chef) who did a great job director 2016s The Jungle Book which nearly hit the Billion Dollar mark. And now they're hoping lightning strikes twice with this remake. The movie also boasts a stellar cast such as Donald Glover (Community, Atlanta) as Simba, and even James Earl-Jones (Star Wars, Conan The Barbarian) Reprising his role as Mufasa. I cannot express how much people are excited about this movie!

5. Godzilla: King Of The Monsters

Legendary's third movie in its Monster Universe. A franchise which hasn't properly gotten off the ground. So here's to hoping that the third time is the charm! The trailers for this movie look fantastic! With fan-favourite monsters, Mothra and Ghidorah, returning to fight Godzilla. Also, the addition of Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) is sure to sell some tickets as her fanbase is quite large. This is looking like the Monster Universe's most ambitious project!

4. John Wick 3

The John Wick trilogy comes to a close with the third instalment. This series of movies has been a love letter to the action genre and it's final movie promises not to disappoint. Last time we left John Wick (Keanu Reeves) he was in a seriously tough situation, with a bounty on his head that every assassin is interested in and with no help from his former allies. So the stakes have never been higher! And so the action will be bigger and better than ever! Halle Berry (X-Men, Die Another Day) joins the cast for this movie, although her role is not yet explained. This movie is sure to be a satisfying end to John Wick's story.

3. Hobbs & Shaw

Speaking of John Wick, one half of the directing duo for the first one, David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2), takes on the Fast & Furious Spin-Off Hobbs & Shaw. Personally, I am very excited for this movie. These two characters were arguably the best part of Fate Of The Furious (2017, F. Gary Gray) with the Prison Escape scene being the highlight of the movie. But now with a movie all to themselves, a great action director and supporting actors like Vanessa Kirby (The Crown) and Idris Elba (Luther, Pacific Rim) this might just be one of the best action blockbusters of the year!

2. It: Chapter Two

After the It: Chapter One was a surprise hit, becoming the most successful horror movie at the box office, this sequel gained a huge following of eager fans waiting to see what happens next! (regarding that they hadn't read the book). This movie has quite the cast with names like James McAvoy (Split, X-Men: First Class) and Bill Hader (Trainwreck, Superbad) playing older versions of the Losers Club. Plus, Bill Skarsgard (Castle Rock, Deadpool 2) returning to reprise his take as the terrifying clown, Pennywise, this is sure to be on par with its predecessor if not better!

1. Star Wars: Episode IX

Hitting the top of my list is the currently untitled Star Wars: Episode IX. There's no denying that Disney's new trilogy of Star Wars films has faced controversy. With many fans not being happy with the way that they have handled characters and story threads. With many fans accusing the new trilogy of being agenda-driven rather than story-driven. However, this is still one of the biggest movie franchises of all time. And after the disappointing box office numbers of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018, Ron Howard) I imagine that Disney and Lucasfilm will be careful with the way that this movie is handled. Hoping that Episode IX repairs their relationship with the fanbase. Personally, I am very excited for this movie. I have liked what Disney and Lucasfilm have done with this trilogy and can't wait to see how they finish it all!

So that's my list for the top 10 blockbusters coming out in 2019. What do you think of my list? Are there any that I missed out? If so then leave a comment down below. And, if you liked this list then you can follow this blog for more content. Thank you for reading!

Auteurship: David Fincher

The Auteur theory is that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision.  I am going to use  David Fincher as an example, because he usually has similar aspects throughout all of his films such as bleakness of a setting; several single frames that flash, low-key lighting and characters that are in the shadows so you can’t see their faces. All of these styles can be found in Fight Club (1999). In most of Fincher’s films the settings seem to have a bleak and uninteresting look to them. In Fight Club this is shown in places like the office of where Jack works, the cancer support group hall, Jack’s apartment. All of these places are just different shades of the same colour (mainly green, grey or dark orange). This is to convey a sense of misery and darkness within the storyline, which the characters are just drifting through their lives. Something that Fincher portrays beautifully in Fight Club. This is a good example of David Fincher’s position as an Au...

Oz: The great and Powerful Review

When I first heard that this film was being made I was very skeptical. The Original film with Dorothy and the wicked witch was an important part of many people's childhood that it seemed that this prequel couldn't live up to it. But after seeing it at the cinema my skepticism was laid to rest. This film is AWESOME!!!    The film follows a similar structure narrative-wise to that of the Wizard of Oz. You start off with in Kansas where everything is in black-and-white, keeping to continuity, then you have the twister that takes the character to the land of Oz. The audience is then introduced important characters like Theodora and Evanora, we even get the journey down the yellow-brick road. The writers have brilliantly taken all these elements from the previous film and used them to create a contemporary origin to the Oz that children were introduced too in 1939.    James Franco was well cast in this role as a rude and selfish magician who w...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Trailer Highlights

Star Wars: The Last Jedi New Poster So Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) comes out in December and we're only now getting the second trailer, just two months away from the release date. Either Disney has seriously dropped the ball on the promotional campaign or they're just so confident in this film that they feel it doesn't require a lot of publicity for fans to get excited about. My guess would be the latter. Since the past two Disney-Produced Star Wars films have both raked in a combined total of $3,124,280,897, It'd be safe to say that Disney would think that. However, right before the trailer was released last night, director Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) suggested to fans that they should avoid this trailer. WHAT?! What kind of a marketing tactic is that?! Perhaps if you wish for fans to avoid spoilers then you should urge the marketing campaign to avoid them at all costs. Initial Thoughts Yeah! This trailer has me more intrigued about the story than ever, ...
