Deadpool 2 Review (Non-Spoilers)

Arguably one of the most recognised superheroes about right now. Deadpool returns for his highly anticipated sequel. After hitting it big with Deadpool (2016, Tim Miller) which became the highest grossing R-rated film of all time this sequel has a lot of expectations to live up to. With introducing new characters like Cable (Josh Brolin) and Domino (Zazie Beetz) and replacing director Tim Miller (Rockfish, Aunt Luisa) with David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde). It'll be interesting to see how this film differs from it's predecessor.

First Thoughts

This film is hilarious! It has great humour, great action and great characters. A serious improvement from the first film! But the film isn't just gags and action. It also has a lot of heart to it. Emotional moments are not sacrificed for cheap gags. Which I was very happy to see! However, this film is not without its flaws. The story isn't exactly original, which can hurt the film a bit. But overall, this is a really good superhero movie!

Deadpool/Ryan Reynolds

Ryan Reynolds (Green Lantern, RIPD) is back in the role that he was born to play. Honestly, it's insane how perfect Reynolds is for Deadpool! With his comedic timing, both vocally and physically. What really got me about Reynolds's humour is how he's able to take shots at himself and his career, which has had its ups and downs. So that's quite commendable. However, this is also something of a character study for Deadpool. Looking into what it is he truly fights for and what he truly believes to be the right thing. It was touched upon in the first film "Is Deadpool a hero?" But they really go into it for this film. So that was good!

Cable/Josh Brolin

Brolin (The Goonies, Jonah Hex) is now 2 for 2 when it comes to Superhero roles. After nailing it as Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War (2018, Joe & Anthony Russo) Brolin brings his stern and serious acting chops to this role. Cable works well as the straight man to Deadpool's funny man. and their interactions are some of the best parts of the film. But also Cable brings a lot of heart to this film, with his past and motivations. I really hope to see more of Cable in the future. Hell, I wouldn't mind a Cable Solo film! That's how much I loved him in this!

Domino/Zazie Beetz

Zazie Beetz (Geostorm, Dead Pigs) does a good job in this film. However, she doesn't have as big a role as I thought she would have. She has quite good action scenes, and her powers are actually quite interesting when displayed on-screen. It's kinda like Final Destination, except it's working for you! I wouldn't mind seeing more of Domino in future films, as there was quite a lot of character that was hinted at in the film but not really touched upon.

Meta-Humour

If you loved the meta-humour from the first film then you are going to really enjoy this film. They have really doubled-down on the meta-humour. Not just making reference to the X-Men franchise and the rest of the Superhero genre, but all of Hollywood. There are witty and intelligent references to James Bond, Disney Ryan Reynolds's career and other things. It's all done very well and in good taste.

Action

The action in this film has improved from the first one, which was to be expected as director David Leitch has taken the reigns for this sequel. The fights in this film are very well choreographed, quite intense and also quite funny when they have to be! My only issue with it is that it's not as strong of action as John Wick or Atomic Blonde. But that doesn't stop the action from being enjoyable.

Story

The story for Deadpool 2 is... Kind of unoriginal. I won't go into complete detail but it does borrow a lot from past X-Men films. Particularly Logan (2017, James Mangold) and Days OF Future Past (2014, Bryan Singer). The parallels are so obvious that I'm actually quite surprised that Deadpool doesn't make reference to it at all. Although, the story does allow for some good character moments. Not just with Deadpool but with Cable and others (I can't really get into it too much).

Conclusion

Whilst the story is unoriginal, this is a really good superhero film that I cannot recommend enough! If you're a Deadpool fan you'll love it, if you're a general Superhero fan you'll love it, and if you're a comedy fan you'll also love it!

Auteurship: David Fincher

The Auteur theory is that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision.  I am going to use  David Fincher as an example, because he usually has similar aspects throughout all of his films such as bleakness of a setting; several single frames that flash, low-key lighting and characters that are in the shadows so you can’t see their faces. All of these styles can be found in Fight Club (1999). In most of Fincher’s films the settings seem to have a bleak and uninteresting look to them. In Fight Club this is shown in places like the office of where Jack works, the cancer support group hall, Jack’s apartment. All of these places are just different shades of the same colour (mainly green, grey or dark orange). This is to convey a sense of misery and darkness within the storyline, which the characters are just drifting through their lives. Something that Fincher portrays beautifully in Fight Club. This is a good example of David Fincher’s position as an Au...

Oz: The great and Powerful Review

When I first heard that this film was being made I was very skeptical. The Original film with Dorothy and the wicked witch was an important part of many people's childhood that it seemed that this prequel couldn't live up to it. But after seeing it at the cinema my skepticism was laid to rest. This film is AWESOME!!!    The film follows a similar structure narrative-wise to that of the Wizard of Oz. You start off with in Kansas where everything is in black-and-white, keeping to continuity, then you have the twister that takes the character to the land of Oz. The audience is then introduced important characters like Theodora and Evanora, we even get the journey down the yellow-brick road. The writers have brilliantly taken all these elements from the previous film and used them to create a contemporary origin to the Oz that children were introduced too in 1939.    James Franco was well cast in this role as a rude and selfish magician who w...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Trailer Highlights

Star Wars: The Last Jedi New Poster So Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) comes out in December and we're only now getting the second trailer, just two months away from the release date. Either Disney has seriously dropped the ball on the promotional campaign or they're just so confident in this film that they feel it doesn't require a lot of publicity for fans to get excited about. My guess would be the latter. Since the past two Disney-Produced Star Wars films have both raked in a combined total of $3,124,280,897, It'd be safe to say that Disney would think that. However, right before the trailer was released last night, director Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) suggested to fans that they should avoid this trailer. WHAT?! What kind of a marketing tactic is that?! Perhaps if you wish for fans to avoid spoilers then you should urge the marketing campaign to avoid them at all costs. Initial Thoughts Yeah! This trailer has me more intrigued about the story than ever, ...
