Weekly Movie Updates: Jared Leto for Blade Runner 2, Black Suited Superman!

For this blog I'm starting a new thing called Weekly Movie Updates, where I highlight 5 movie headlines that came out in the week and discuss them. I can't promise that I'd be able to do this every week but I will do my best to do so.

1. Jared Leto cast in Blade Runner 2
The sequel to the iconic 1982 movie has cast Jared Leto. Whilst it hasn't been clarified as to the type of role that Leto will be playing it is most likely that he'll be playing a replicant (Robots that look like people). The reason I think this is because Leto's charisma, especially after playing the Joker, would be better suited for that kind of character. If you've ever seen the original Blade Runner then you'll know about the main antogonist, Roy Batty (Rutger Hauer), who embodied the ideals of rebellion with his punk look and inhuman characteristics. Whilst also expressing an attitude of self determination. Something that Leto could do a great job of embodying those characteristics as a replicant. Also, if I'm correct, Ryan Gosling has also been cast in this film. I believe that Gosling will be a Blade Runner (Replicant Hunters) and the two actors will do a great job of recreating the tension between Deckard and Baddy in the first film. This is great casting!

2. Bradley Cooper & Lady Gaga to star in A Star Is Born Remake
This is the third remake of the 1937 film. About a failing actor with drinking issues and a young starlet wanting to make it in Hollywood. The film is to be Cooper's directorial debut and will be Gaga's first lead role in a film. Personally, I believe this is a risky project. The film has a director who's never directed a film before and an actress who has never been a lead before. Both working on a story that has been praised with every incarnation of it on screen. However, I do believe this film should be given the benefit of the doubt. Bradley Cooper has proven himself as a great actor, and actors have transitioned to behind the camera in the past with good results, and Lady Gaga showed to be a really good actress in American Horror Story. Winning an Emmy for that very show. I do think this is a risky project

3. Zendaya as Mary-Jane in Spider-Man: Homecoming
The second reboot of the classic Superhero Spider-Man is currently being filmed and it appears that Disney Channel star Zendaya has been cast as Peter Parker's main love interest, Mary-Jane Watson. After watching a few episodes of Shake It Up! I thought "Yeah, this girl can actually pull off Mary-Jane". She's able to play the party girl, which MJ was mainly known for, which was somewhat lacking with Kirsten Dunst's performance whilst also, potentially modernising her. However, there have been a few complaints from fans complaining about Zendaya's ethnicity. Wanting an actress with a more faithful look to the comics. It's understandable to where these fans are coming from. However, race shouldn't really be an issue. And going back to modernising the character, Spider-Man is primarily set in Queens, New York. Which has become quite diverse as of late. With no specific ethnic group holding a majority. So I believe she will make a great Mary-Jane!

4. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly to play Holmes & Watson
After their previous successes together, such as Step-Brothers and Talladega Nights, Ferrell and Reilly have joined up again. This time as the famous fictional characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. After the many recent interpretations of Sherlock Holmes over recent years: The BBC series, The CBS series, Ian McKellen's Mr. Holmes and Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes films (Soon to be a trilogy). It'll be great to see the duo from a more comedic standpoint, and from the previous work that these two have done, expect a lot of laughs!

5. Henry Cavill teases Black Suited Superman
Superman is returning! After being killed in the finale of Batman V Superman, Henry Cavill has posted a picture recently on his Instagram account of Superman's new suit. Very much resembling the suit Superman wore in the comics, after returning from the dead. As a DC fan I am very excited to see Superman return. It's very fitting that they're tying in the return of Superman with the Justice League. As in the comics there were a team of Supermen who took the place of Superman after his death, such as Superboy and Steel.  For the film they're replacing this team with the Justice League. Henry Cavill has done a really good job with Superman. Making him more relatable and human. I can't wait to see more of him in Justice League and future DC films.

So these are five movie headlines for this week. If there any other stories that you'd like me to look over then please comment. Hope you like it!

Auteurship: David Fincher

The Auteur theory is that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision.  I am going to use  David Fincher as an example, because he usually has similar aspects throughout all of his films such as bleakness of a setting; several single frames that flash, low-key lighting and characters that are in the shadows so you can’t see their faces. All of these styles can be found in Fight Club (1999). In most of Fincher’s films the settings seem to have a bleak and uninteresting look to them. In Fight Club this is shown in places like the office of where Jack works, the cancer support group hall, Jack’s apartment. All of these places are just different shades of the same colour (mainly green, grey or dark orange). This is to convey a sense of misery and darkness within the storyline, which the characters are just drifting through their lives. Something that Fincher portrays beautifully in Fight Club. This is a good example of David Fincher’s position as an Au...

Oz: The great and Powerful Review

When I first heard that this film was being made I was very skeptical. The Original film with Dorothy and the wicked witch was an important part of many people's childhood that it seemed that this prequel couldn't live up to it. But after seeing it at the cinema my skepticism was laid to rest. This film is AWESOME!!!    The film follows a similar structure narrative-wise to that of the Wizard of Oz. You start off with in Kansas where everything is in black-and-white, keeping to continuity, then you have the twister that takes the character to the land of Oz. The audience is then introduced important characters like Theodora and Evanora, we even get the journey down the yellow-brick road. The writers have brilliantly taken all these elements from the previous film and used them to create a contemporary origin to the Oz that children were introduced too in 1939.    James Franco was well cast in this role as a rude and selfish magician who w...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Trailer Highlights

Star Wars: The Last Jedi New Poster So Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) comes out in December and we're only now getting the second trailer, just two months away from the release date. Either Disney has seriously dropped the ball on the promotional campaign or they're just so confident in this film that they feel it doesn't require a lot of publicity for fans to get excited about. My guess would be the latter. Since the past two Disney-Produced Star Wars films have both raked in a combined total of $3,124,280,897, It'd be safe to say that Disney would think that. However, right before the trailer was released last night, director Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) suggested to fans that they should avoid this trailer. WHAT?! What kind of a marketing tactic is that?! Perhaps if you wish for fans to avoid spoilers then you should urge the marketing campaign to avoid them at all costs. Initial Thoughts Yeah! This trailer has me more intrigued about the story than ever, ...
