San Diego Comic Con 2016: Top 5 movie trailers

Comic Cons happen all the time around the world. From New York to London. But no matter what, the one Comic Con that gets all the big headlines every year is the one in San Diego. Home of the famous Hall H, people all over the world gather to take part in the event. And where big movie studios come to present their work to fans. For this post I'll be looking at the top 5 movie trailers that premiered at Comic Con this year.

No.5: King Arthur
I think that just about every generation has grown up with some version of the Arthurian legend. Whether it's live-action film, television or animation. But this trailer looks like a different take on the character then we've seen in a while. Giving Arthur more of a chip on his shoulder by being raised on the street. Charlie Hunham seems to fit the role quite well, judging from this first look. Guy Ritchie has placed his own personal style onto it, which I personally like. I think he did a very good job re-imagining Sherlock Holmes and, from this first trailer, I'm looking forward to to seeing how his style influences the Arthurian legend. The trailer also shows off the fantasy elements aswell, which look visually incredible. The only problem I would give it is Jude Law as the antagonist. He doesn't really come off as threatening to me, but we'll have to wait and see. Overall this looks like a pretty good film. Hopefully the final product is just as good.

No.4: Doctor Strange
Marvel is finally going to look into it's magical stories. And this trailer actually sold me on it. The first trailer felt a bit too much like Inception. But I feel this one better showcases the fantasy elements very well. The visuals look stunning, the costumes are great. Benedict Cumberbatch seems to deliver as the main protagonist. He's a great actor, as shown in Sherlock, and he more or less looks like the character. Almost as if they took him right out of the comic. Also the funny joke about WiFi was really good. Marvel just coming off of Civil War, which was amazing! So I have high expectations for this film.

No.3: Lego Batman Movie
With The Lego Movie being huge success in 2014 it made sense for Warner Bros. to expand on it. This trailer for Lego Batman was a lot more funnier than I initially expected. The jokes were on-point, the movement of the characters were hilarious and the voice talents behind these characters are so fitting. I would even say that the best line out of ALL Comic Con came from this trailer. Where Dick Grayson (Robin) discovers the Batcave and says "Does Batman live in Bruce Wayne's basement?" To which Batman replies "No! Bruce Wayne lives in Batman's attic!" Both hilarious and reflective onto which persona is the real one. The only problem I have with it is that it might have shown us too much of the jokes in the film, which could potentially damage the film. But hopefully that's not the case.

No.2: Wonder Woman
Whether you liked Batman V Superman or not. Most would agree that Wonder Woman was amazing! Celebrating her 75th anniversary this year, Wonder Woman got a lot of attention at Comic Con. And this trailer was able to show her in all her warrior glory! Gal Gadot shines as Wonder Woman. Chris Pine looks pretty good as Steve Trevor (Wonder Woman's love interest). The world war one aesthetic is astounding. Really selling me on this film, as I wasn't really 100% on the film being set in that era. But now I see how well it fits with her character. As a huge DC fan I can honestly say that this film truly captures what I love about Wonder Woman and I can't wait to see it!

No.1: Justice League
This is perhaps the trailer that, more or less, won Comic Con! Primarily because no one was expecting it! Let alone for it to be released to the public! After the horrible backlash that Batman V Superman received (Unfairly so) Justice League as if it could repair the relationship between DC and critics. There's more humour, more colour but also in-keeping with the feel of BVS. The characters look amazing. The scene with Flash and Batman was amazing, Aquaman looks like such a badass, and Batman and Wonder Woman return just as awesome as they were in BVS. The only issues I have with it is Cyborg. Whilst he looks good the animation doesn't really AS good as I thought it would be. Hopefully the filmmakers can fix that before it's release in November. I would have liked to have seen Superman as well, but I believe Henry Cavill hasn't really shot anything for Justice League yet so I can forgive it. Basically this looks like it'll be incredible! It seems to try and fix the problems people had the previous films whilst also honouring the people who loved them.

And that's my personal list of the top 5 trailers to come out of Comic Con this year. If you feel differently please leave a comment. Thank you for reading!

Auteurship: David Fincher

The Auteur theory is that a director's film reflects the director's personal creative vision.  I am going to use  David Fincher as an example, because he usually has similar aspects throughout all of his films such as bleakness of a setting; several single frames that flash, low-key lighting and characters that are in the shadows so you can’t see their faces. All of these styles can be found in Fight Club (1999). In most of Fincher’s films the settings seem to have a bleak and uninteresting look to them. In Fight Club this is shown in places like the office of where Jack works, the cancer support group hall, Jack’s apartment. All of these places are just different shades of the same colour (mainly green, grey or dark orange). This is to convey a sense of misery and darkness within the storyline, which the characters are just drifting through their lives. Something that Fincher portrays beautifully in Fight Club. This is a good example of David Fincher’s position as an Au...

Oz: The great and Powerful Review

When I first heard that this film was being made I was very skeptical. The Original film with Dorothy and the wicked witch was an important part of many people's childhood that it seemed that this prequel couldn't live up to it. But after seeing it at the cinema my skepticism was laid to rest. This film is AWESOME!!!    The film follows a similar structure narrative-wise to that of the Wizard of Oz. You start off with in Kansas where everything is in black-and-white, keeping to continuity, then you have the twister that takes the character to the land of Oz. The audience is then introduced important characters like Theodora and Evanora, we even get the journey down the yellow-brick road. The writers have brilliantly taken all these elements from the previous film and used them to create a contemporary origin to the Oz that children were introduced too in 1939.    James Franco was well cast in this role as a rude and selfish magician who w...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Trailer Highlights

Star Wars: The Last Jedi New Poster So Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) comes out in December and we're only now getting the second trailer, just two months away from the release date. Either Disney has seriously dropped the ball on the promotional campaign or they're just so confident in this film that they feel it doesn't require a lot of publicity for fans to get excited about. My guess would be the latter. Since the past two Disney-Produced Star Wars films have both raked in a combined total of $3,124,280,897, It'd be safe to say that Disney would think that. However, right before the trailer was released last night, director Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) suggested to fans that they should avoid this trailer. WHAT?! What kind of a marketing tactic is that?! Perhaps if you wish for fans to avoid spoilers then you should urge the marketing campaign to avoid them at all costs. Initial Thoughts Yeah! This trailer has me more intrigued about the story than ever, ...
